Good news for me:
Well-connected public figures report that they have been told recently by Rudolph Giuliani that, as of now, he intends to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.Giuliani would be my first choice for President in '08. Maybe with Gingrich as a running mate? Would work for me.

Does abject poverty create a "breeding ground" for terrorism?
When the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia presented Rudy Guiliani with a check for $10,000,000 after 9/11, Rudy sent it back to him after hearing that the Crown Prince gave a statement shortly thereafter stating that he hoped the world would now look to the circumstances of abject poverty and humiliation that lead people into terrorism. Guliani rejected the argument immediately (and put his money where his mouth was)and at the same time set the stage for most pundits and politicians to reject that argument as well.
However, major writers like Thomas Friedman, movies like Syriana, and even President Bush, have recently made comments about the need to relieve poverty throughout the world to eliminate the conditions which lead to recruiting terrorists.
Supposedly Andrew Carnegie stated that the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor have no morals. If he did say that, I assume he means that that traditional societal norms (like not blowing people up and/or abusing money and power) do not apply to people on the farthest fringes of the economic scale due to their abject poverty or unbelievable wealth.
It is a hard issue. Suicide bombs and beheadings are evil, plain and simple. But are the Palestinians justified in resisting Isreal for occupying lands that their grandparents lived in? Perhaps. So if resistence if justified, is it the means to resistance that are unjustified? I believe that the means rarely ever justify the ends, and in the case of Palesitine and Israel, the means are destroying their hopes for their ends.
